CO2 is responsible for 55 to 60% of radiative forcing. See Fig. 1. Fast and<br \/>\naggressive CO2 mitigation is essential to combat the resulting climate change. But this is not enough.<br \/>\nCO2 mitigation must be combined with fast and aggressive mitigation of the pollutants causing the<br \/>\nother 40-45% of warming: black carbon aerosols, methane and the tropospheric ozone it catalyzes,<br \/>\nand hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Because these pollutants have atmospheric lifetimes of days to<br \/>\ndecades, they are referred to as short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs). While we have known about<br \/>\nSLCPs for more than 35 years, the following scientific developments have catapulted them to the<br \/>\nfront lines of the war against climate change<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">First is the recognition that we have already added enough greenhouse gases to warm the\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>planet by 2.4<span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00b0C or more during this century. Reduction of SLCPs, in addition to CO2\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">mitigation, is essential for keeping the cumulative warming under 2\u00b0C during this century.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Thus it is nearly impossible to meet the Copenhagen protocols without reducing SLCPs.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Second is the recognition that without fast-action, warming may cross the 1.5\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">to 2<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">\u00b0C\u00a0threshold by the middle of this century. Reducing SLCPs is the most effective strategy for\u00a0preventing this in the short-term, since most of their warming effect disappears within weeks to a decade and a half after they are cut.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Third is the recognition that in addition to being climate forcers two of the three SLCPs\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">are also potent air pollutants and cutting them will prevent millions of premature deaths\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">ever year and protect tens of millions of tonnes of crops.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Fourth is the recognition that the health benefits and crop improvements will accrue\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">primarily in the nations that mitigate these pollutants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Fifth is the recognition that there are practical and proven ways to reduce all three of these\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">pollutants and readily available laws and institutions to support the reductions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.igsd.org\/documents\/NeedforSpeed17July20121019amEST.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Full Report &gt;<\/a><\/strong><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reducing Short-Lived Climate Pollutants Can Cut the Rate of Global Warming By Half and Arctic Warming by Two-Thirds for the Next 30 to 40 Years Summary. 17 July 2012.
